I was out in the garage this morning, drifting the stock sight out of my recently acquired Winchester Model 52 rifle. My plan is to install the much nicer Lyman micrometer rear sight.

Anyway, on the bottom of the stock rear sight was engraved “R Bonar Pine Bluff AR” - the original owner perhaps? I looked around on the interwebs and I believe I’ve located his daughter. She’s 81 and still a practicing physician in Alaska. I’m going to call her office tomorrow to see if she’d like to have this engraved sight back.

Plot twist: that’s the name of the intended target. The gun was originally purchased to kill R Bonar.

What kind of last name is Bonar?

The interwebs say Scottish or Irish.

If that’s true, it took a while. The rifle was manufactured in 1928 and R Bonar of Pine Bluff AR didn’t die until 1968.

Also, it’s a 22. Not really your first choice for a hired killing.

Super cool. I always think about pawnshop guns when I get a lump sum

I’m pretty sure this pawnshop gun is going to cost me 2x the acquisition price by the time I have it how I want it.
